Engagement ring shopping is the exciting beginning in every couples forever journey, but sometimes finding the PERFECT ring for the one you love can be an overwhelming experience. The ring serves as a “trophy” that your partner will showcase proudly on her left-hand for the world to see, so it’s important to find something that truly captures her full style and essence. No Pressure!

Lucky for you – we’re here to help! Here are some ring buying tips that will help guide you through the process:

First, Get Inspired

Before you hit the stores, get some inspiration. One of the easiest ways to do this is by browsing the Web.

Check out Pinterest and other lifestyle blog sites to see what’s trending, or even scroll through her social media profiles to see if she’s favorited or saved any specific styles or brands. Women in love LOVE to look at engagement rings and wedding ideas, so she may have a plethora of secret content saved up that you can utilize if you’re sneaky enough.

If surfing the web isn’t proving to be much help, you can also look for real-life inspiration. If you’re buying a ring for your partner, be sure to ask her family and friends what her jewelry tastes are. Ask about any diamond shapes, metal type or band preferences she may have mentioned so you can be sure to get something she will really love.

It’s All About the 4 C's

The 4 C’s have to be considered when purchasing an engagement ring (assuming you're going with a diamond). The 4 C's include carat, clarity, cut and color.

Cut, which is probably the most important “C” to consider, refers to the shape and positioning of the diamond's facets.

Clarity refers to flaws or inclusions in the diamond, if there are any, with the best rating being "F," which stands for flawless.

Carat refers to the actual weight of the diamond.

Color refers to any hints of color found within a diamond, which is then rated on a letter-based grading scale. For example, a colorless diamond will receive a grade of "D" which is the best you can get.

Metal & Setting to Match

When it comes to the ring's metal type, you have a couple different options. Some of the most popular metals include white gold, yellow gold, or platinum; however, there are far more metal options to choose from than these alone.

Your best bet is to choose a metal that goes well with the clothing and/or additional fashion jewelry that the receiver typically wears. This is a ring she’ll be wearing all the time, so you’ll want to make sure it’s a piece that will compliment her everyday attire.

Mistakes to Avoid

Do not rush it! If you aren't sure what ring you want or just aren’t finding that special piece that speaks to you, take a step back and consider all your options. Maybe hold off on ring hunting for a bit or consult your partner directly. You don’t want to settle for a ring that’s just not the right fit, so take your time.

Another mistake you’ll want to avoid – breaking the bank. While this may not be very romantic, it’s important to consider the cost of a ring. The last thing you want is to start a life with your partner buried in massive debt. Start the ring buying process with a price/budget in mind and stick to it.
